## Summary

Amazon scrapped plans to build four data centers on the former George Washington University campus in Loudoun County, Virginia. The 122‑acre site will instead be repurposed for mixed‑use and residential development. Amazon will donate 25 acres to the county for a community arts center and new recreational facility, and give $5 million to the county’s housing fund.

The decision follows Amazon’s July proposal and a September meeting with Loudoun County Board Chair Phyllis J. Randall. Amazon vice president Josh Weissman said the company considered residents’ concerns about noise and power consumption. Local opposition has grown as AI use pushes demand for larger data centers, raising electricity costs and environmental worries.

Trump’s recent call for data‑center builders to pay local communities a dividend and the broader debate over energy use highlight the tension between AI infrastructure growth and community impact. Amazon’s shift may influence future siting decisions and signal a need for dialogue between tech firms and residents.
