## Summary

Fake images of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and actor Jason Statham with hair have appeared on social media platforms like X, Threads, and Bluesky. The posts, which suggest the men have undergone hair transplant surgery, are not real. Verge staff confirmed the edits by tracing the original photos through reverse image searches, finding unaltered versions from 2023 for Bezos and 2011 for Statham. Both images were taken in the same environment and with the same outfits, lacking hair in the originals.

The manipulated images exploit generative AI tools to create convincing edits, though Verge staff could not determine if AI was used. Hair transplants are unlikely for these individuals due to the lack of donor hair and visible facial swelling. The posts likely aim to generate engagement, a common tactic in social media shitposting. Verge notes that AI labeling solutions on platforms fail to flag such fakery effectively, making verification difficult for casual users.

## Key points

- Fake hair images of Bezos and Statham appeared on X, Threads, and Bluesky
- Reverse image searches confirmed original photos from 2023 and 2011, without hair
- AI tools may have been used, but no markers like Content Credentials or SynthID were detected

## Why it matters

Rising AI-generated deepfakes and photo edits challenge trust in online content, especially for public figures. Social media’s weak verification tools make it harder for users to distinguish real from fake, increasing risks of misinformation.
