This update supports PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT files, and code. The feature is available immediately for all Gemini users, though there are platform limitations: PDF previews and editing work on both web and mobile, while all other file formats are currently restricted to the web version.\n\nUsers can now modify files without leaving the app, a change from earlier this year when generating files required downloading them for external editing. New tools include a full-screen mode for expanding documents and the ability to highlight specific text or tables to prompt Gemini for changes, such as converting a table into a graph. This functionality complements existing integrations in Google Workspace apps, like the Gemini bar in Google Docs.\n\nThe move places Gemini in direct competition with Anthropic, which launched a similar document and presentation editing feature in Claude chats earlier this year. By integrating file manipulation directly into the chat flow, Google aims to streamline workflows for users who rely on AI for content creation and data handling.","keyPoints":["Gemini now supports generating and editing PDFs, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Markdown, TXT, and code.","PDF editing works on web and mobile; all other file formats are web-only for now.","Users can highlight text in files to ask Gemini for specific changes or conversions."],"whyItMatters":"This reduces friction for users by keeping file creation and refinement within a single interface, potentially increasing Gemini's utility for professional workflows and competing directly with Claude's document features.","category":{"slug":"agents","name":"Agents & Tools","url":"https://digestai.news/category/agents"},"entities":{"companies":["Google","Anthropic"],"models":["Gemini","Claude"],"people":[]},"firstPublishedAt":"2026-10-29T18:45:31Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-29T19:03:06Z","sourceCount":3,"hasPrimarySource":false,"sources":[{"outlet":"The Verge AI","title":"You can generate and edit Google Docs files directly in Gemini chats now","url":"https://theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/1022519/google-gemini-file-editing-documents-pdfs","publishedAt":"2026-10-29T18:45:31Z","type":"press","primary":false,"lead":true},{"outlet":"Unite.AI","title":"Gemini App Now Lets Users Edit Documents and PDFs In-Chat","url":"https://unite.ai/gemini-app-now-lets-users-edit-documents-and-pdfs-in-chat","publishedAt":"2026-10-29T19:03:06Z","type":"press","primary":false,"lead":false},{"outlet":"Google Workspace Updates","title":"Create, preview, and edit files directly in the Gemini app","url":"http://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2026/10/create-preview-and-edit-files-directly-in-the-Gemini-app.html","publishedAt":"2026-10-29T18:43:11Z","type":"press","primary":false,"lead":false}],"sourceNotes":null,"discussions":[],"thread":{"title":"Google Integrates Gemini Features Into Workspace","url":"https://digestai.news/thread/google-expands-gemini-student-hub-to-workspace-for-education","storyCount":6},"cite":{"text":"Digest AI, \"Google adds file editing to Gemini chats for all users\", 29 October 2026, https://digestai.news/story/google-adds-file-editing-to-gemini-chats-for-all-users","publisher":"Digest AI","title":"Google adds file editing to Gemini chats for all users","datePublished":"2026-10-29T18:45:31Z","url":"https://digestai.news/story/google-adds-file-editing-to-gemini-chats-for-all-users"},"generatedBy":"Written by Digest AI's editorial model from the linked sources; the sources are the record.","license":"Headlines, digests and key points are written by Digest AI and may be quoted with a link to the story page.
