## Summary

Amanda, Google's head of data center energy, stated this week that building data centers in space could cost up to 100 times more than those on Earth. This comment serves as a reality check for the industry, particularly given that Google is currently testing AI server chips in orbit.

The executive advised exploring all terrestrial options before considering extraterrestrial solutions. The remark highlights the significant cost disparity between orbital infrastructure and ground-based facilities, suggesting that space-based data centers remain economically impractical for near-term AI expansion despite ongoing technological experiments.

## Key points

- Google's head of data center energy said space data centers cost up to 100 times more than Earth-based ones.
- Google is currently testing AI server chips in orbit.
- The executive advised exploring terrestrial options before going extraterrestrial.

## Why it matters

This statement tempers expectations for space-based AI infrastructure, indicating that economic constraints keep data center expansion firmly on Earth for the foreseeable future.
