## Summary

Google’s Project Suncatcher satellite, launched on October 1, 2026, carries four AI chips and consumes about one kilowatt of power, roughly the same as a hair dryer.

The satellite reached orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9, sharing the launch with other payloads. Google is still testing the idea, aiming to see whether its chips can survive radiation, extreme temperature swings, and the mechanical stresses of space.

James Altucher, a tech expert, points to Elon Musk’s plan for a million solar‑powered data‑center satellites, arguing that power is AI’s biggest bottleneck. Google says future Suncatcher systems could link satellites together and run on solar power, but the current test is a proof‑of‑concept rather than a finished product.

## Key points

- google’s project suncatcher satellite carries four ai chips and uses ~1 kW power
- the satellite reached orbit on a spacex falcon 9 on oct 1 2026
- musk plans a million data‑center satellites powered by solar, per fcc filing

## Why it matters

Testing AI chips in orbit could unlock new power and scale for AI, but launch costs, radiation, and heat remain hard challenges.
