## Summary

Google began rolling out **skills** in its standalone **Gemini app** on October 13, 2026, with completion expected by mid-November. Skills allow users to train Gemini on custom tasks, such as automating repetitive workflows or integrating with Google Drive. The feature is available to all **Google Workspace** customers and personal account holders, with no age restrictions for the app version.

The **Workspace** version of skills—previously called **Gems**—faces delays. Its launch to **Rapid Release** domains was supposed to finish by October 12 but is now postponed. **Scheduled Release** domains were set to begin on October 19 but are also delayed. Workspace skills are restricted to users aged 18+, and availability depends on plan tiers, including **Business Starter/Standard/Plus**, **Enterprise Starter/Standard/Plus**, and education add-ons like **Google AI Pro for Education**. Google will update timelines as they confirm progress.

## Key points

- Gemini app skills roll out gradually from October 13, 2026, with completion by mid-November
- Workspace skills delayed indefinitely; restricted to users over 18 with specific plan tiers
- Skills enable custom AI training for tasks like automation and Google Drive integration

## Why it matters

Skills expand Gemini’s utility for businesses and individuals by letting users tailor AI to specific workflows. The delay for Workspace may disrupt adoption plans, while the app version’s broader access could accelerate adoption among personal users.
