## Summary

IEEE released the **IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite**, an AI-powered tool built on the full text of millions of peer-reviewed IEEE publications. The suite, an optional subscription upgrade for institutional Xplore Digital Library users, uses a proprietary AI system optimized for STEM research. It replaces keyword searches with conversational queries, generating summaries, defining technical terms, and linking results to verified sources—all while avoiding hallucinations by restricting answers to IEEE’s curated dataset of full-text articles and metadata.

The project stemmed from collaboration with over **3,000 testers**, including engineers and library professionals, who shaped its features. IEEE emphasizes trustworthiness over speed, citing internal tests showing a **threefold increase in result quality and accuracy**. W. Clem Karl, vice president of IEEE Publication Services, framed the tool as a responsible alternative to AI assistants prone to errors, ensuring researchers can verify findings rather than rely on unchecked answers.

## Key points

- IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite uses full-text IEEE publications and metadata, not abstracts alone, to avoid hallucinations
- Optional subscription upgrade for institutional Xplore Digital Library users, developed with input from 3,000 testers
- Internal tests show a threefold improvement in result quality and accuracy over traditional AI research tools

## Why it matters

The suite offers researchers a trustworthy AI assistant grounded in verified STEM content, addressing concerns about AI-generated inaccuracies in academic work.
