The device is designed to function as an interface for Meta’s AI chatbot and its consumer agent, Muse, relying on six built-in microphones and a physical activation button for interaction. This strategic pivot appears to be a direct response to public backlash against camera-equipped wearables, which some have labeled as invasive surveillance tools.\n\nThe new hardware is expected to be unveiled at Meta Connect, the company's annual developer event scheduled for next week in Menlo Park. While Meta’s Reality Labs division continues to face substantial financial losses, the company remains a market leader in smart eyewear. By offering a camera-free option, Meta aims to broaden its appeal to users who are hesitant about the privacy implications of always-on recording devices, potentially expanding its addressable market in the competitive AI hardware sector.","keyPoints":["Meta is developing 'Luna' smart glasses without cameras to mitigate privacy concerns and consumer backlash.","The device features six microphones and a button to interact with Meta's AI chatbot and Muse agent.","Luna is expected to be announced at Meta Connect, Meta's upcoming annual hardware and developer event."],"whyItMatters":"This move signals a strategic shift in AI hardware design, prioritizing user privacy and trust over comprehensive data capture. It highlights the growing tension between advanced AI capabilities and public comfort with surveillance, potentially setting a new standard for consumer wearable AI interfaces.","category":{"slug":"hardware","name":"Hardware & Compute","url":"https://digestai.news/category/hardware"},"entities":{"companies":["Meta","The Information","TechCrunch"],"models":["Luna","Muse"],"people":[]},"firstPublishedAt":"2026-09-16T20:12:00Z","updatedAt":"2026-09-18T14:30:00Z","sourceCount":4,"hasPrimarySource":false,"sources":[{"outlet":"TechCrunch AI","title":"After accusations of selling ‘perv glasses,’ Meta prepares to sell a pair without a camera","url":"https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/16/after-accusations-of-selling-perv-glasses-meta-prepares-to-sell-a-pair-without-a-camera","publishedAt":"2026-09-16T20:12:00Z","type":"press","primary":false,"lead":true},{"outlet":"The Rundown AI","title":"Meta's less-creepy smart glasses","url":"https://therundown.ai/articles/meta-less-creepy-smart-glasses","publishedAt":"2026-09-18T14:30:00Z","type":"newsletter","primary":false,"lead":false},{"outlet":"engadget.com","title":"What to expect at Meta Connect 2026: New AI glasses, a mixed reality headset and more","url":"https://engadget.com/2262932/what-to-expect-at-meta-connect-2026-new-ai-glasses-a-mixed-reality-headset-and-more","publishedAt":"2026-09-18T13:35:00Z","type":"press","primary":false,"lead":false},{"outlet":"yourstory.com","title":"Meta AI glasses could go camera-free with privacy-focused Luna","url":"https://yourstory.com/ai-story/meta-ai-glasses-camera-free-luna","publishedAt":"2026-09-15T17:00:00Z","type":"press","primary":false,"lead":false}],"sourceNotes":null,"discussions":[],"thread":{"title":"Meta Muse Agent Rises From Privacy Glasses To Chip Design","url":"https://digestai.news/thread/meta-develops-camera-free-luna-smart-glasses-to-address-privacy-concerns","storyCount":7},"cite":{"text":"Digest AI, \"Meta develops camera-free 'Luna' smart glasses to address privacy concerns\", 16 September 2026, https://digestai.news/story/meta-develops-camera-free-luna-smart-glasses-to-address-privacy-concerns","publisher":"Digest AI","title":"Meta develops camera-free 'Luna' smart glasses to address privacy concerns","datePublished":"2026-09-16T20:12:00Z","url":"https://digestai.news/story/meta-develops-camera-free-luna-smart-glasses-to-address-privacy-concerns"},"generatedBy":"Written by Digest AI's editorial model from the linked sources; the sources are the record.","license":"Headlines, digests and key points are written by Digest AI and may be quoted with a link to the story page.
