The sidebar tool, installable from the Microsoft Marketplace, lets users draft, revise, proofread, summarize and format documents without leaving the Word interface. It is offered to all ChatGPT users worldwide, from free‑tier accounts to enterprise plans, with usage limits that follow each plan’s existing quotas. Organizations may need admin approval before the add‑in can be deployed.\n\nThe new add‑in differs from Microsoft’s existing Copilot assistant, which is built for enterprise workflows and relies on Microsoft Graph for data from emails, calendars and files. By contrast, the ChatGPT add‑in targets individual creators, freelancers, students and anyone seeking AI help without a separate Copilot license. The integration also extends to Excel and PowerPoint, indicating a broader rollout across the Office suite. The move builds on the long‑standing Microsoft‑OpenAI partnership that began in 2019 and underpins Microsoft’s AI strategy in its productivity apps.","keyPoints":["ChatGPT add‑in for Word launched September 17, 2026, available via Microsoft Marketplace","Free‑tier and enterprise ChatGPT users can access it, with plan‑based usage limits","Some organizations must obtain admin approval before installing the add‑in"],"whyItMatters":"Embedding ChatGPT directly in Word lowers the barrier for AI‑assisted writing, giving individuals and small teams capabilities previously limited to paid Copilot licenses.","category":{"slug":"marketing","name":"Marketing & Small Business","url":"https://digestai.news/category/marketing"},"entities":{"companies":["Microsoft","OpenAI"],"models":["ChatGPT"],"people":[]},"firstPublishedAt":"2026-09-17T14:16:00Z","updatedAt":"2026-09-18T00:44:53Z","sourceCount":2,"hasPrimarySource":false,"sources":[{"outlet":"cryptobriefing.com","title":"Microsoft integrates ChatGPT into Word for enhanced drafting and editing","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/microsoft-chatgpt-word-integration","publishedAt":"2026-09-17T14:16:00Z","type":"press","primary":false,"lead":true},{"outlet":"chatgpt.com","title":"ChatGPT for Word (Clippy is back)","url":"https://chatgpt.com/apps/word","publishedAt":"2026-09-18T00:44:53Z","type":"press","primary":false,"lead":false}],"sourceNotes":null,"discussions":[{"site":"Reddit","url":"https://www.reddit.com/r/singularity/comments/1wjbjlb/chatgpt_for_word_clippy_is_back/","points":null}],"thread":{"title":"AI Writing Tools Battle in Microsoft Word","url":"https://digestai.news/thread/microsoft-adds-chatgpt-addin-to-word-for-drafting-and-editing","storyCount":2},"cite":{"text":"Digest AI, \"Microsoft adds ChatGPT add‑in to Word for drafting and editing\", 17 September 2026, https://digestai.news/story/microsoft-adds-chatgpt-addin-to-word-for-drafting-and-editing","publisher":"Digest AI","title":"Microsoft adds ChatGPT add‑in to Word for drafting and editing","datePublished":"2026-09-17T14:16:00Z","url":"https://digestai.news/story/microsoft-adds-chatgpt-addin-to-word-for-drafting-and-editing"},"generatedBy":"Written by Digest AI's editorial model from the linked sources; the sources are the record.","license":"Headlines, digests and key points are written by Digest AI and may be quoted with a link to the story page.
