## Summary

Microsoft has applied a biomimicry approach to more than 20 data‑center sites in the U.S. and Germany, adding 100 acres of prairie and forest at Mount Pleasant, 185 acres of native pollinator habitat and 25,000 trees in Virginia, and 400 acres of woodland in San Antonio. The company says the work is part of a broader strategy to make its data‑center network carbon‑negative and water‑positive by 2030.

Despite the landscaping, Microsoft’s total emissions rose 25 % in fiscal 2025, from 16.2 million to 20.3 million metric tons of CO₂‑equivalent, mainly due to data‑center expansion and the suspension of certain renewable‑energy certificates. In June it signed a 20‑year agreement to buy power from a Chevron natural‑gas plant that could supply 2.67 GW, with first power in 2028. Local officials in San Antonio and Texas have raised concerns about tree removal, traffic and environmental impacts, and the state has paused new data‑center permits while regulators audit the sector.

The company maintains its 2030 goals and frames the gas deal as a transitional strategy, but critics say the ecological restoration is “lipstick on a pig” and call for independent verification of habitat outcomes.

## Key points

- Microsoft applies biomimicry to 20+ data‑center sites, adding 400 acres of woodland in San Antonio
- Emissions rose 25 % in fiscal 2025 to 20.3 million metric tons CO₂‑eq, citing expansion and certificate suspension
- Microsoft signed a 20‑year gas deal with Chevron for 2.67 GW, first power in 2028

## Why it matters

Microsoft’s dual push of green landscaping and long‑term gas power highlights the tension between AI infrastructure growth and environmental claims, affecting public trust and regulatory scrutiny.
