The project was to host a Microsoft‑funded supercomputer and was slated to receive power by the end of the year.\\n\\nBBC reports say Microsoft has terminated its involvement in the Loughton supercomputer, and the company declined to comment. Nscale said it is looking at alternative power sources after the grid issue pushed the power‑supply timeline into the 2030s. The firm stressed that its overall relationship with Microsoft remains strong on other projects in Norway, Portugal and the United States. The centre is expected to create 250 permanent jobs once operational. Microsoft recently announced that part of its $30bn (£22bn) UK investment would fund the Loughton supercomputer, but that component now appears uncertain.","keyPoints":["Nscale pledged £2bn to build the Loughton data centre, billed as the UK's largest AI facility.","BBC reports Microsoft has terminated its funding of the Loughton supercomputer; Microsoft declined comment.","Power supply delayed to the 2030s; the site is expected to create 250 permanent jobs when opened."],"whyItMatters":"The pull‑out stalls the UK's biggest AI compute hub, delaying capacity growth and job creation while highlighting power‑grid challenges for large AI projects.","category":{"slug":"business","name":"Business & Funding","url":"https://digestai.news/category/business"},"entities":{"companies":["Nscale","Microsoft","BBC"],"models":[],"people":[]},"firstPublishedAt":"2026-10-19T20:56:34Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-19T20:56:34Z","sourceCount":1,"hasPrimarySource":false,"sources":[{"outlet":"bbc.com","title":"Microsoft pulls out of Nscale's Essex AI data centre","url":"https://bbc.com/news/articles/c9m26kl5y7epo","publishedAt":"2026-10-19T20:56:34Z","type":"press","primary":false,"lead":true}],"sourceNotes":null,"discussions":[{"site":"Reddit","url":"https://www.reddit.com/r/artificial/comments/1xa8ubb/microsoft_pulls_out_of_nscales_essex_ai_data/","points":null}],"thread":{"title":"Nscale Anthropic Deal Amid Microsoft Exit","url":"https://digestai.news/thread/microsoft-cancels-deal-to-rent-23-000-nvidia-ai-chips-from-nscale-in-essex","storyCount":2},"cite":{"text":"Digest AI, \"Microsoft pulls out of Nscale's Essex AI data centre\", 19 October 2026, https://digestai.news/story/microsoft-pulls-out-of-nscale-s-essex-ai-data-centre","publisher":"Digest AI","title":"Microsoft pulls out of Nscale's Essex AI data centre","datePublished":"2026-10-19T20:56:34Z","url":"https://digestai.news/story/microsoft-pulls-out-of-nscale-s-essex-ai-data-centre"},"generatedBy":"Written by Digest AI's editorial model from the linked sources; the sources are the record.","license":"Headlines, digests and key points are written by Digest AI and may be quoted with a link to the story page.
