## Summary

Microsoft will enable pay-as-you-go billing for new Microsoft 365 Copilot Business licenses by default starting December 1, 2026, for purchases made through Cloud Solution Providers (CSP). The change shifts budgeting from seat counts to task-based credit limits, with a default of 4,000 Copilot Credits per user per month. Administrators can adjust these limits, and usage will be tracked per task rather than per person.

The move also decouples Copilot from Microsoft 365 contracts, allowing standalone purchases. AI Builder capacity add-ons will end on November 1, directing users to Copilot Credits instead. Japan is included in the rollout, unlike initially excluded countries like Australia and France. Microsoft emphasizes transparency in usage tracking to help businesses allocate credits effectively, warning that unmanaged spending could lead to unclear billing.

## Key points

- Pay-as-you-go billing for Copilot Business becomes default for new CSP purchases on December 1, 2026
- Default credit limit is 4,000 Copilot Credits per user per month, adjustable by administrators
- Copilot can now be purchased standalone, and AI Builder add-ons end on November 1

## Why it matters

Businesses must now track AI usage by task, not seats, requiring budget planning and monitoring. The shift could reduce wasted credits on underused features while demanding clearer internal policies.
