CEO Sam Altman said the biggest hurdle is building a robot \"brain\" that can perceive the real world, make decisions and carry out tasks safely and accurately. He added that a human‑like form is useful because most environments are designed for people.\n\nThe company has not disclosed the robots' final design, target tasks, or timeline. OpenAI is recruiting specialists in AI systems and motion‑control engineering to develop the necessary hardware and software. Its longer‑term vision includes general‑purpose robots that could assist with a wide range of activities, eventually leading to personal assistants for everyday life. The announcement signals OpenAI’s move from purely software‑based AI toward physical agents, though many details remain uncertain.","keyPoints":["OpenAI announced it is planning to create AI-powered humanoid robots.","CEO Sam Altman said the biggest challenge is building the robot's \"brain\" for real‑world understanding and decision‑making.","OpenAI is hiring specialists in AI systems and motion‑control, but has not revealed design details or specific tasks."],"whyItMatters":"Bringing general‑purpose AI to humanoid robots could extend AI from software to physical tasks, opening new markets for personal assistants and enterprise automation.","category":{"slug":"robotics","name":"Robotics & Physical AI","url":"https://digestai.news/category/robotics"},"entities":{"companies":["OpenAI"],"models":[],"people":["Sam Altman"]},"firstPublishedAt":"2026-10-19T14:27:00Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-19T14:27:00Z","sourceCount":1,"hasPrimarySource":false,"sources":[{"outlet":"gulftoday.ae","title":"OpenAI plans to develop AI-powered humanoid robots","url":"https://gulftoday.ae/news/2026/10/20/openai-plans-to-develop-ai-powered-humanoid-robots","publishedAt":"2026-10-19T14:27:00Z","type":"press","primary":false,"lead":true}],"sourceNotes":null,"discussions":[],"thread":{"title":"OpenAI Confirms Humanoid Robot Development Plans","url":"https://digestai.news/thread/openai-says-it-will-build-a-humanoid-robot-demo-planned-for-2027","storyCount":3},"cite":{"text":"Digest AI, \"OpenAI plans to develop AI-powered humanoid robots\", 19 October 2026, https://digestai.news/story/openai-plans-to-develop-ai-powered-humanoid-robots","publisher":"Digest AI","title":"OpenAI plans to develop AI-powered humanoid robots","datePublished":"2026-10-19T14:27:00Z","url":"https://digestai.news/story/openai-plans-to-develop-ai-powered-humanoid-robots"},"generatedBy":"Written by Digest AI's editorial model from the linked sources; the sources are the record.","license":"Headlines, digests and key points are written by Digest AI and may be quoted with a link to the story page.
