He noted that search referrals dropped by more than 1 million per week in October, attributing this decline to the fundamental shift caused by AI Mode and AI Overviews. Huffman argued that these features push content down the search page rather than driving users to external sites, marking a change from Google’s previous role as a traffic driver.\n\nHuffman also mentioned that Reddit believes its machine-translated content is being ranked lower in search results, which primarily affects non-US users. Despite this, he emphasized that demand for Reddit remains high, noting that the company is still a top search term and that Google continues to crawl the site aggressively. The issue, he said, is that Google is no longer sending users to Reddit as it used to.\n\nTo counter the loss of search referrals, Reddit is focusing on becoming a direct, sticky daily destination. Recent moves include launching a “For You” feed with interest-based recommendations and testing an AI experiment that converts posts into short videos. Additionally, the company announced a mandatory login requirement for all users, which Huffman claims will improve user experience, boost the advertising business, and enhance data protection.","keyPoints":["Reddit search traffic dropped by more than 1 million referrals per week in October.","CEO Steve Huffman says Google AI Mode and AI Overviews do not drive traffic to Reddit.","Reddit is forcing logins and launching a 'For You' feed to retain users directly."],"whyItMatters":"This highlights a major shift in search dynamics where AI answers reduce external referrals, forcing publishers to build direct user engagement and retention strategies to survive.","category":{"slug":"business","name":"Business & Funding","url":"https://digestai.news/category/business"},"entities":{"companies":["Reddit","Google"],"models":[],"people":["Steve Huffman"]},"firstPublishedAt":"2026-10-29T15:19:00Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-29T15:19:00Z","sourceCount":1,"hasPrimarySource":false,"sources":[{"outlet":"theverge.com","title":"Reddit’s CEO says Google’s AI Mode ‘does not drive traffic’","url":"https://theverge.com/tech/1022848/reddit-ceo-google-ai-mode-traffic","publishedAt":"2026-10-29T15:19:00Z","type":"press","primary":false,"lead":true}],"sourceNotes":null,"discussions":[],"thread":null,"cite":{"text":"Digest AI, \"Reddit CEO says Google AI Mode does not drive traffic\", 29 October 2026, https://digestai.news/story/reddit-ceo-says-google-ai-mode-does-not-drive-traffic","publisher":"Digest AI","title":"Reddit CEO says Google AI Mode does not drive traffic","datePublished":"2026-10-29T15:19:00Z","url":"https://digestai.news/story/reddit-ceo-says-google-ai-mode-does-not-drive-traffic"},"generatedBy":"Written by Digest AI's editorial model from the linked sources; the sources are the record.","license":"Headlines, digests and key points are written by Digest AI and may be quoted with a link to the story page.
