Senator Bernie Moreno calls Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei 'alarmist' in letter

The letter cites specific statements from Anthropic researchers and Amodei himself. It references Jacob Coxon, a researcher who recently left Anthropic, and Evan Hubinger, who estimated the chance of AI killing all humans within the next decade at more than 10%. Moreno also noted Amodei’s agreement with Coxon and his own assessment that the risk of SI going "really, really badly" is 25%. Moreno described this stance as an instinct to "wreak havoc on the public SI discourse."

The timing of the letter coincides with Anthropic’s expected initial public offering (IPO). Moreno mentioned that investors are discussing a valuation close to $2tn, which is about 42 times the company's revenue. He warned that focusing on worst-case outcomes could distract from national security priorities, specifically the need to maintain US technological dominance over China. While acknowledging Amodei’s signature on the White House accord on super intelligence as a "notable first step," Moreno insisted that addressing risks does not require halting development or surrendering American leadership.
