Agility Robotics Debuts Digit 5 Humanoid With New Safety Architecture

Agility Robotics unveiled Digit 5, the fifth generation of its general-purpose humanoid robot, on September 15, 2026, describing it as the company’s first humanoid engineered for cooperatively safe work at scale and reporting more than $300 million in multi-year customer orders as of May 2026.

“Digit 5 is removing a major barrier to scaling humanoid robots in industrial environments,” said Peggy Johnson, Agility Robotics’ CEO, in the company’s announcement. Johnson said the robot was built to the exact requirements customers provided after three years of Digit 4 working on their production floors. Cooperatively Safe Operation

Agility said Digit 5’s safety architecture is designed to reduce dependence on the protective barriers typical of traditional robotic automation so the robot can work in close proximity to people. The company also said Digit previously became the first humanoid to pass an independent field evaluation on a customer production line for industrial safety standards administered by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Digit 5 continuously monitors for people using proprietary AI algorithms and multiple sensor technologies, and responds by avoiding the person, stopping, or assuming a seated position. Visual and auditory cues convey the robot’s motion intent and alert nearby people so they can participate in safe operation, while an independent safety controller supervises Digit’s response whenever someone is detected within an unsafe distance and instantly triggers the appropriate safety response.

Agility said it is the first launch partner for NVIDIA’s Halos for Robotics platform, pairing its systems with NVIDIA IGX Thor and Halos Core infrastructure. “Safely operating around people and assets is what moves humanoid robots from pilots to industrial deployments at scale,” said Deepu Talla, vice president of robotics and edge AI at NVIDIA.

Hardware Upgrades and Full Facility Workflows

Agility said Digit 5 delivers 40% more payload through a new leg design engineered to withstand repetitive lifting and powered by proprietary cycloidal actuator technology, and that the robot can repeatedly lift loads up to 50 lb (22.7 kg), allowing full coverage of single-person lift tasks in OSHA-regulated facilities.

A new 90-minute runtime battery charges in 9 minutes, giving Digit 5 a 10:1 run-to-charge ratio (up from Digit 4’s 2:1) and enabling more than 20 hours of productive work in a 24-hour day, according to the company. Digit 5 weighs 284 lb (129 kg), stands 5 feet 11 inches (1.81 m) and reaches heights of up to 7.2 feet (2.2 m), up from Digit 4’s 5.5 feet, dimensions Agility said allow it to reach the same shelves and move through the same aisles, doorways and workstations built for people. Swappable end-effectors with ISO-standard mounting flanges let the robot’s tools be changed for the job at hand, from tote handling to machine tending.

Since its first commercial deployments, Digit 4 has largely focused on automating tote-based material handling. Agility said Digit 5 will use the company’s proprietary approach to physical AI-based capability training to add manipulation skills and expand across a facility’s full workflow: depalletizing goods as they arrive, machine tending, kitting and sequencing, quality inspection as items move through the facility, and palletizing them for shipment. Agility’s robot management platform coordinates each handoff with a facility’s existing autonomous mobile robots, conveyors and warehouse systems to keep material flowing between stations.

Deployment Record and Fleet Management

Agility said Digit has the longest tenure among humanoid robots actively working in industrial facilities, with nearly three years of continuous commercial deployment. Digit 4 has logged more than 65,000 hours of operational time across customer sites in North America, including GXO, Schaeffler, Amazon and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, according to the company. At GXO’s Flowery Branch facility near Atlanta, Digit 4 reached a cumulative 100,000-tote milestone while maintaining approximately 98% accuracy on-task, Agility reported.

Digit 5 integrates with Agility Arc, the company’s cloud platform for deploying and managing Digit fleets, which gives operators visibility into fleet KPIs such as uptime, throughput and Mean Time Between Incidents and connects with existing Warehouse Management, Warehouse Execution and Manufacturing Execution Systems. Agility’s Digit 5 product page states that the solution was trained on 65,000 hours of real-world operational data.

Agility said Digit navigates and operates using onboard cameras, depth sensors and inertial measurement units, processing sensory data locally and transmitting system health and diagnostic information to Agility Arc. Transmitted data is encrypted, segregated by customer and secured using mTLS and TLS 1.2+ rooted to a private certificate authority, while on-robot storage is encrypted for data at rest, according to the company.

U.S. Manufacturing and 2027 Availability

Digit is assembled at RoboFab, Agility’s 70,000-square-foot facility in Salem, Oregon, which the company describes as the first factory purpose-built to assemble humanoid robots at scale. At full capacity, RoboFab is designed to produce up to 10,000 Digit robots per year and employ more than 500 people. Agility’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office leads engineering testing, validation and skills development, and its Fremont, California facility, opened in July 2026, serves as the company’s hardware and Physical AI development hub.

Agility plans to make Digit available for commercial deployment outside North America for the first time, starting with the European Union and United Kingdom, with Digit 5 expected to carry a CE mark and additional regulatory marks enabling market access to the EU, Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Early access to Digit 5 is expected to begin in the first half of 2027, with general availability for manufacturing, warehouse and distribution operators expected by the end of 2027.
