Ron Johnson says AI agents won’t replace physical retail

Johnson pointed to Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol and OpenAI’s effort to turn ChatGPT into a shopping destination as examples of the industry’s push toward “agentic commerce.” He was unequivocal that nobody will let an AI choose and buy a $1,000‑$2,000 laptop without seeing it first, arguing that high‑price items are too personal to delegate entirely to a bot. He expects agents to simply make shoppers more informed before they walk into a store.

Despite his skepticism about AI replacing stores, Johnson remains an AI optimist. He reflected on Apple’s store philosophy—people, not commissions, driving sales—and noted his own failed turnaround at J.C. Penney and the bankruptcy of his e‑commerce startup Enjoy Technology. He believes Steve Jobs would have embraced AI, but not as a substitute for human intuition.
