Amazon Polly adds 14 generative voices and Hindi, Finnish support
Amazon announced a major upgrade to its Polly Generative engine, now generally available in production. The update adds 14 new voices across nine locales, bringing the catalog to 57 generative voices in 11 languages and 25 locales. Hindi and Finnish generative voices are offered for the first time, and the service now runs in 11 AWS regions, including GovCloud.
Key points
- 14 new generative voices across 9 locales raise the total to 57 voices in 11 languages.
- Hindi and Finnish generative voices are now generally available for the first time.
- Upgrade requires no code changes, uses the same API and pricing as before.
The upgrade is a drop‑in replacement: voice names and API calls remain unchanged, so existing applications continue to work without code changes. Pricing stays the same, with no new SKUs or cost increases. Amazon highlights use cases such as contact‑center IVR, real‑time voice agents, media dubbing, e‑learning narration, and accessibility. Justus Reinikainen, product manager at Sanoma Media Finland, said the new Finnish voice improves the naturalness of their automated news audio.
Developers can access the new voices via the standard SynthesizeSpeech API, the AWS console, CLI, or SDKs, and can stream audio with low latency using the Bi‑Di Streaming API.
