[Pet acting differently x AI] How to use ChatGPT to organize symptoms and decide whether to go to the vet

Do you ever have those nagging worries? If it were a human, they could describe their own physical condition, but with pets, the owner has to observe and judge that vague feeling that “something is just off.”Your anxiety just grows while you lack the information to make a decision right?

Today, I will introduce a way to use ChatGPT to organize the situation and create materials to help you decide whether to go to the vet when you feel your pet is acting differently than usual. I have included a prompt you can use as-is.

Why is it difficult to judge when a pet is “acting strange”?

There is a reason why it is difficult to tell when a pet is unwell.

First, they cannot tell you in words. It would be easy if they could say “my stomach hurts” or “my head feels heavy,” but pets can only tell us through changes in their behavior.

Next, only the owner can notice the difference from their usual self. Even if you go to the vet, the veterinarian can only see how they are on that day. Only the owner, who is with them every day, can explain how they are doing “compared to usual.”

And finally, you don't know where to draw the line between “wait and see” and “go to the hospital immediately”. When you search online, even minor symptoms can bring up results about “possibilities of serious illness,” making you even more anxious, or conversely, they might be described so lightly that you feel relieved, leading to inconsistent information.

Using AI can help you with the parts of “putting the difference from their usual self into words” and “organizing the urgency.”

Step 1: Write down the changes you see as they are

First, tell the AI what you noticed in bullet points just as it is. You don't need to try to summarize it well.

The point is that it asks you back, “When did it start?” and “Is there anything else?” You can notice confirmation items you might have overlooked here, which makes explaining the situation when you actually consult the vet much smoother.

Step 2: Have the urgency criteria organized

Next, organize the materials to help you decide whether to “go to the hospital now” or “wait and see.” The point here is not to have the AI “diagnose the illness,” but to have it teach you the “general criteria for urgency”.

An answer based on the premise of 'consult if in doubt' is important. AI is merely a tool to organize information for judgment and will not make the final decision. In fact, an answer that explicitly states this is more trustworthy.

Step 3: Have an explanation written for the veterinarian

Once you decide to take your pet to the hospital, organize the situation so you can explain it without panicking over the phone or at the reception desk. In the busy setting of a consultation, you will be surprised at how much you miss if you try to answer questions on the spot.

Step 4: Create a system for regular recording

To avoid panicking in an emergency, keep your regular records in order. The reason you can notice 'something is different' quickly is precisely because you have daily records.

Just a 3-level check is enough to keep up with using a smartphone memo app. Even without quantifying it, just having a standard to notice 'something is different' is sufficient.

You can also use it this way (example from a reader model)

To make it easier to visualize, I will give one example. Please read this as a hypothetical example, not an actual consultation.

Person A, who lives with a cat, noticed one morning that the cat didn't ask for food earlier than usual. Thinking, 'Maybe it's just my imagination,' they wrote down the situation using the prompt from Step 1 just in case, and the AI asked back, 'Are there any changes in excretion?' Only then did they remember that they felt the cat had been to the litter box less frequently over the past two days.

When they checked the urgency guidelines in Step 2, they received a general summary stating, 'If the pet has an appetite but excretion has decreased, it is often recommended to consult a vet within a few days while monitoring the situation.' As a result, they were able to book an appointment at the hospital that same day and consult early.

The key to this case is that you didn't just dismiss it as 'maybe it's my imagination,' but actually put it into words. By having the AI ask you questions, you may notice changes you had overlooked yourself. Even if it's not an emergency, being able to consult early can ultimately lead to peace of mind. That is how you can use it.

Points to note when using it

There are a few things to keep in mind when consulting an AI about your pet's health.

First, AI responses are not a diagnosis. The prompts introduced here are all limited to 'general guidelines' or 'organizing information.' If you are even slightly worried, please do not judge for yourself and consult a veterinary clinic.

Next, if you feel the situation is highly urgent, do not waste time asking an AI. If your pet is lethargic, unresponsive, or having trouble breathing, or if something is clearly wrong, skip the steps in this article and contact your regular vet or an emergency night clinic immediately.

And, points to watch out for vary significantly depending on the breed and age of the dog or cat. If your pet has a pre-existing condition or is elderly, please prioritize the instructions of your regular veterinarian over the AI's general answers.
