Meta Glasses Help Blind Veterans

A new program by Meta is giving veterans the gift of technology to help assist them in their everyday lives. It’s part of Meta’s commitment to provide 130,000 Meta artificial intelligence glasses to every legally blind veteran in the United States. Meta is partnering with the Blinded Veterans Association to distribute the new specs to veterans at the Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. That includes Charly Sapp, who served his country as a Navy engineer and is a craftsman, using his hands to build things. “I can see everything, but you're really fuzzy,” Sapp said. The 84-year-old lost his sight about 8-10 years ago and was told that it stemmed from a childhood disease. He can’t read far signs, texts or important documents but Meta glasses will help him regain some of his independence again. “It's kind of amazing that the glasses can read print,” Sapp said. On Wednesday, Charly and dozens of other veterans were schooled on the technology that will help them in their lives. “The light bulb that goes off for our veterans is what makes me the most excited, getting to see that idea that there is still a little bit of hope out there, especially when you're living in isolation or you feel like you've completely lost all independence and you're relying on somebody else,” national executive director of the Blind Veterans Association Lea Rowe said. The Blind Veterans Association wants veterans to know that if they have seeing impairments and couldn’t attend Wednesday, they can contact the organization to get Meta glasses.
